There was plenty to write and talk about in business and finance in 2023, writes Lionel Barber, Wincott chairman.

This was the year artificial intelligence went mainstream; when crypto-king Sam Bankman-Fried was sent to jail; when the long-dormant Japanese stock market went on a tear; the Chinese economy slowed down and the inflation beast showed signs of being tamed.

Closer to home,  BP lost its boss to a sex scandal. Dame Sharon White said she was bowing out at John Lewis. Jim Ratcliffe grabbed a chunk of Manchester United, the Daily Telegraph Group went up for sale and Rupert Murdoch announced he was finally retiring, aged 92.

This year, the Wincott Foundation judges will be looking for journalism which captures the drama and importance of the major stories of 2023.

We are looking for fine writing and inventive story-telling in all formats, from news reporting, long(er) form analysis, TV and audio broadcasting as well as data journalism.

The Wincott awards are the premier business journalism awards in the UK.

Who dares wins!  We look forward to your entries.

The 2023 awards are now open for submissions. Last year the Wincott Foundation received 150 entries for the 2022 awards. This year we hope to do better. In seeking entries, the Wincott Foundation reaches out to all the nations and regions of the UK, appeals to all generations of journalists and encourages all genres of journalism.

The deadline for entries is March 1 2024 and all the details of how to apply are here.
